Watch This Girl Dance!

Girl Walk//All Day is a dance music video project, in progress, featuring a 71-minute continuous music track by the band Girl Talk and the awesome improvisational dance of Anne Marsen (and talented others). The project is seeking funding. Check out the project’s Kickstarter site here and the trailer (warning, lyrics NSFW, F-bombs and N-bombs abound):

Bieber Nods to Lesbians Who Look Like Bieber

In a funny art-imitates-life-imitates-art moment, Justin Bieber gave a little shout-out to the Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber blog (proof that there’s room for everything on the internets!). On the recent episode of Chelsea Lately, host Chelsea Handler prodded Bieber about lesbians’ affection for him, and he responded by acknowledging the blog. (Wait for it, it’s at about 3:35, and the interview isn’t as painful as you might think.)

This was the only interview I’ve ever seen with Justin Bieber and he came across as sort of a sweet kid, playing the straight man to Handler’s goofiness.

But, now I have to go apologize to my 14-year-old son for posting this.

Map of Tasmania

Remember the character Stacy Merkin on The L Word? The one Jenny kept calling “Vagina Wig”? Watch for the merkins in Amanda Palmer and the Young Punx’ “Map of Tasmania” (a term I’ll be using forever!):

Thanks for sharing the video, Violet Blue!

In case you’ve forgotten:

Before the Internet: Dyke Anthem Redux

Last night I had a conversation with a friend about this whole lesbian anthem thing and she shared her point of view.

Although we’re almost the same age, we hail from different parts of the country. I’m from the west, she’s from the south. I came out later in life, after opposite marriage and a child. She’s known she was a lesbian forever.

Do We Have a Dyke Anthem?

Rebecca Drysdale’s terrific new song for the It Gets Better Project has launched on iTunes. Download a copy and play it loudly everywhere you go! It’s a fantastic contribution to the project.

But this got me thinking. Is there a lesbian anthem? Do we have that one song that makes us want to stand up and cheer? That will inspire us to pump our fists in the air? (Thumbs tucked in, please!)

It Gets Better Anthem

Rebecca Drysdale, comedian and performer, created this incredible music video in support of the It Gets Better Project. Warning, the language is definitely not safe for work.

Thank you to Dan Savage for sharing this video and to Rebecca Drysdale & crew for making it! The song will be available on iTunes 1/7/11. Yes, that’s day after tomorrow.

Pink Rocks as Rosie

Prophetically, the ever-hot Pink saluted Rosie the Riveter in her recent “Raise Your Glass” video, in which she proclaims “Raise your glass if you’re wrong in all the right ways.”

(I’m stealing and using the line “too school for cool”!)

She Forgot Octopussies

Even with that omission, I may be in love, just a little.

Thanks to Boing Boing for the tip. I’ll be checking in on the Merriam-Webster “Ask the Editor” videos regularly.

Is She Science’s Most Influential Woman?

I first heard about Rebecca Skloot’s book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, in an episode of RadioLab, a science program that is broadcast on public radio stations, and is also available in podcast form. (If you’ve never heard RadioLab, I highly recommend it.)

Henrietta Lacks was a very poor, uneducated African-American woman who lived in the south. She was raised in a family of tobacco farmers, and for much of her childhood lived in the same “home-house” that her family had lived in as slaves. She was, quite literally, born on the dirt floor of that home. Continue reading

The Kids Are All Right, But The Movie Sucks

At a screening, director Lisa Cholodenko kisses actress Julianne Moore with more passion than the lesbians in her movie ever display.

I had a busy summer getting ready for graduate school, and after the semester started in August, I didn’t have time to think.

That’s my excuse for not seeing Lisa Cholodenko’s film, The Kids are All Right, when it was in theaters. Continue reading

AND, This One Too Hot for American Television

While I’m on the subject of lesbian-themed car commercials that didn’t make the airwaves, this lipstick lesbian Hyundai commercial ran during the Olympics – but not in the United States. It was restricted to Canada, where apparently sports viewers aren’t frightened by girl-on-girl flirting.

(Tell me, why are all commercial lipstick lesbian pairings a blond and a brunette?)

Lesbian Car Ad Too Hot for Italian Television

A racy commercial for the new Renault Twingo that features a playful, seductive scene between women has been banned by Italian television network executives. The 30-second commercial begins with two attractive women exchanging smoldering glances at a party before heading off to a bedroom, and ends with a surprise.

The commercial has outraged gay groups in Italy, with many claiming it is offensive to lesbians.

A spokeswoman for Publicis, the Milan-based agency that created the commercial, said, “We wanted to create an advert that was original, enjoyable and at the same time not vulgar and I believe we have achieved that.”

Glenn Close in Drag. Yum.

Joining the ranks of Barbara Streisand in Yentl and Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria, Glenn Close plays a woman disguised as a man in her new film Albert Nobbs. She recently rocked a short haircut, suit, and tie on the set of the movie in Dublin, Ireland.

Albert Nobbs is set for release in 2011. In the film, based on a short story by George Moore, Close plays the title character of an 19th century English woman who dresses up as a male butler to try to get a job in Ireland. Close played Albert Nobbs in an off-Broadway stage production of the story and co-wrote the screenplay for the film version.

Close, 63, stars in the television drama Damages and has been nominated for Oscars for her roles in 1980s films such as Dangerous Liaisons and Fatal Attraction*. She is also known for playing Cruella de Vil in Disney’s 1996 live-action movie 101 Dalmations and its 2000 sequel. Close had a cameo role as a male pirate in the 1991 Steven Spielberg film “Hook”.

* Looking like this, Glenn can boil my bunny any time.

Femme Boxers? Knock Me Out!

This limited edition print by artist Koren Shadmi would look great over a certain butch’s bed…

Blasts From the Past

Sorry folks, this video is now gone from YouTube. You missed a seriously weird celebrity mash-up. However, I hear the promo is now running on HLN – something I can’t fathom. I always thought that when celebrities signed on for a project this bizarre (imagine a camera pan with Katarina Witt, Tonya Harding, and Glenn Close all singing on a beach together) they included stipulation that it not be aired in the U.S.

Wow. I didn’t think I’d hang in there for the whole six minutes of this video, but the amazing range of people who show up in it kept me mesmerized.

This cover of “Let It Be” is a promo for a Norwegian show called Gylne Tider (Golden Times). The huge cast features everyone from Lou Ferrigno, to Kathleen Turner, to Freddy Kreuger, to Milli Vanilli and Ricki Lake green-screened together on a beach. It’s so strange and fascinating I feel like I have to share it. Kelli McGillis is in it, so there’s our lesbian connection. Everyone is looking older (and quite real). Does that mean I am too?

(Thanks to Boing Boing for this.)

Girls Just Want to Have Fun

This is just pure feel-good eye candy featuring Cyndi Lauper’s music and the Victoria’s Secret angels. The back-stage video is by photographer Justin Wu, who makes great videos of lip-syncing models. It’s a tough job, but apparently somebody has to do it!

Marian Call’s “Nerd Anthem”

After “meeting” Alaskan singer/songwriter Marian Call on Twitter, I listened to her music and then immediately went hunting for a video performance of her song, “I’ll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It’s Chic”. This is now Geek Porn Girl’s new, unofficial, theme song! And, the best part of the video is that she’s singing in Heroes Only Comics and Games in Cheyenne, Wy. It was her first appearance in a comics shop, which must have been a hit because she was a performer and participant at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego – the true Mecca for all things geek.

Listen, buy music, and support the artist here.

Feel Better Soon, Joan

In a folk version of the classic slip-and-fall accident, legendary singer-songwriter Joan Baez was injured after falling 20 feet out of a tree house. Baez, who was climbing down when the accident occurred, was treated for minor injuries and is reported to be resting comfortably.

The tree house is nestled in a 200-year-old oak tree on her property in Northern California. Baez reportedly had the structure built as a meditation retreat and sometimes sleeps there as well. (It’s okay, Joan, lots of us fall asleep during meditation!)

Baez will be 70 in January and is still hot – maybe even hotter with this whole tree house thing.

A Court Date Becomes Kink Art

Baby, let's play court. I'll be Lindsay and you be the bailiff, okay?

I’ve never thought there was anything particularly sexy about Lindsay Lohan. However, there’s something decidedly hot about these courtroom sketches of her recent day in court by Mona Shafer Edwards.

(Even with a pleated skirt and a sweet little hair-bow, handcuffs just make a girl look so bad.)

No cameras were allowed in the courtroom for Lohan’s recent appearance, the result of failing a couple of drug tests while on probation.

Lohan's attorney is on the left. Didn't I already see this on "The L Word"?

The judge refused to set bail and ordered Lohan to remain in custody until Oct. 22. She returned to jail in handcuffs. The wicked red-soled Christian Louboutin pumps are rumored to have stayed behind.

Steaming Hot: Kimberly Dark’s “Dykeotomy”

A while ago, I had the deep, deep pleasure of seeing one of Kimberly Dark‘s spoken word performances in San Francisco. This powerful femme goddess held the room transfixed: butches, femmes, and everyone on every part of the gender/sexuality identity spectrum was sitting up and paying attention. Some were even straightening their ties and squirming in their seats. Check out the calendar on her website and if you have any opportunity to see one of her performances – run, don’t walk, to get a ticket.

These are some highlights from her one-woman show, “Dykeotomy”:
