Marian Call’s “Nerd Anthem”

After “meeting” Alaskan singer/songwriter Marian Call on Twitter, I listened to her music and then immediately went hunting for a video performance of her song, “I’ll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It’s Chic”. This is now Geek Porn Girl’s new, unofficial, theme song! And, the best part of the video is that she’s singing in Heroes Only Comics and Games in Cheyenne, Wy. It was her first appearance in a comics shop, which must have been a hit because she was a performer and participant at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego – the true Mecca for all things geek.

Listen, buy music, and support the artist here.

Happy Pi Day – A Geek Crush

Honestly, if Bo Burnham was a girl, I think I would propose marriage, or commitment, or domestic partnership, or at very least a co-joined household. He’s smart, funny, and completely shameless:

Do you need more Pi? Or a sexy short story about Pi?

Happy Pi Day! Have a slice for me, I’m gluten-intolerant.

The iPhone Really is a Grrl’s Best Friend

Okay, so its promise to be a vibrator turned out to be a stimulation #fail, however, the iPhone is still turning out to be a grrl’s best friend.

Yeah, it will play your favorite tunes, keep a complete list of your peeps, wake you up in the morning, and let you Google yourself silly. But it will also let you carry Rachel Maddow in your pocket, and let you mix a mojito like mix-master Dr. Maddow herself. Depending on your fashion proclivities, it can teach you seven different ways to tie a necktie or 12 different ways to wrap up a DKNY Cozy. It will monitor your workouts, count your calories, and act as your remote when you’re in a Snuggie on the couch. Continue reading

Fibonacci’s Time Has Come

This seems particularly funny to me today. Some kind soul Stumbled one of my stories, “By the Numbers,” and I ended up with tons of people visiting the blog this week. Judging by the comments, most of them were guys with geek creds. Then today, this on xkcd: a webcomic. Obviously, Fibonacci’s time has come.

More Pi, Please

This year Pi Day sort of snuck up on me. I think that next year I’ll have to create a blog carnival or something. There’s just infinite potential!

I love this cartoon about Pi Approximation Day (July 22). pi_day_dinosaurs

Call me obsessed. I’ve always had a thing for certain numbers, especially what are called the “master numbers” in numerology. I love 11, 22, 33, and 44. My birthday is in master numbers (11/22) and I frequently see them on clocks. For example, I’ll wake up during the night and it will be 3:33, or I’ll check the time at work and it will be 11:22. This has driven some of the people in my life crazy (or at least they thought I was crazy), but other friends say they now see it too, and frequently report my emails arriving with the time 11:22 on them. One friend called last year on my birthday to say she had just bought lunch and the tab was $11.22 and she knew she should call me!

I thought we were on to a great thing when an ex-girlfriend and I had our first date on 9/9/2007, which, of course, is all nines (2007 adds up to nine), and nines have their own special kind of magic. For starters, if you add up the integers in any multiple of nine (what’s called the digital root), you’ll get nine. Try it with the date 9/9/2007, which is really 3×9 or 27, which is again, (2+7), 9. I love it! Here’s some more fun information on nine.

As for Pi. I think I’m a little obsessed. I’m using memorization as a daily meditation exercise, as part of my other yoga practices. I’m up to about 50 decimal points. Who knows where I’ll be next year at 3/14?

P.S. Here’s a link to one of my short stories about Pi.

P.P.S. I just discovered there’s a world ranking list for memorizing Pi. Chao Lu of China tops the list with a world record memorization of 67,890 digits. It took him 24 hours and 4 minutes to recite it! Hell, I’ll be happy if I can get to 100!

Celebrate International Pi Day

Today, 3/14, is International Pi Day and just to prove my geeky worthiness, I’ll write it as far as I can from memory: 3.1415926535897932384626433.

I think that’s correct, but I’m not usually in this good form. However, I helped my son study for a Pi reciting contest his school held yesterday and some of it seemed to stick!

Oh, So Cute! Mandelbrot Bear

If I was going to pick out a plushy to keep my big-brained and oh-so-sexy sweetheart warm in my absence, this would be the one. This fractal teddy bear is named Mandelbrot and was designed by the crafty blogger at Buttons for Mouse.

Those of you who didn’t read James Gleick‘s Chaos: Making a New Science, can bone up on Benoit Mandlebrot and his sets here.

M. Eric Carr at Northlight Computing made this short film Mandlebrot Zoom, featuring the song “Mandlebrot Sets” by Johnathan Coulton. You’ve got to love a song that contains the line “you’re one bad-assed fucking fractal”.

(Baby, I hope you’re out there listening tonight… I’m dedicating this one to you!)

MechanErotica: Meet These Pole-dancing Robots

Well, hell. If this isn’t geek porn, I don’t know what is.

These oddly sexy pole-dancing robots are the creation of 20-year-old mechanical artist Giles Walker. They’re part of a London exhibit called “Mutate Britian“:

Just Call Me Porn Gril

One of things I always look forward to is checking my blog’s dashboard, where I get to see the links that tell me how people found Geek Porn Girl.

A remarkable number of people find this site by searching for it specifically, indicating they’ve visited before or heard about it by word of mouth.

Some search terms are predictable “geek girl,” “geek porn,” “geeky lesbians” – that kind of thing.

But one that comes up all the time is “porn gril”. The implications of this are obvious to me: The searchers are either intoxicated or typing with one hand. One of these is easier to think about than the other.

A remarkable number of people find me by searching for stories about girls and feathers and girls in pillow-fights. I think they’re looking for nubile teens in cotton panties and undershirts bopping each other with pillows at a sexy pajama party, and I hope they’re not disappointed when they find my story The Pillow Fight, which isn’t exactly that.

Likewise, the searchers looking for the Vermithrax Pejorative, a female dragon from Dragonslayer, often find my little love story Following The Thread.

I also like it when a painfully specific geeky detail brings me a reader.

I’m sure the person who searched for “Mason Pearson hairbrush spanking porn” was heartened to find someone else out there with a similar idea. (See my story Under Brush.)

But some specific searches like “vibrator on girl’s knee producing orgasm,” leave me bewildered as to why they were linked to GPG. However, these are the finds that cause me the most glee.

“Sarah Palin undressed”? I can’t help with that one either, although people keep trying on a regular basis.

I think the election is far enough behind Palin now that she could consider publishing some spicy pictures. My search records testify that there’s a market demand.

I’m sure there’s a bunch of guys out there, typing with one hand, that would love to get the other one on a pay site full of naked pictures of Alaska’s also-ran governor.

And with that, she could become Sarah Palin, Porn Gril.

Meet the Nerd Girls

Who are the Nerd Girls?

They’re a group of hot, sexy, engineers. They solve quadratic equations.

They’re tongue-in-cheek, but they’re out to explode the myth that women can’t be both smart and drop-dead gorgeous.

Think of them as Charlie’s Complementary Angles.
