I really dislike giving any energy or publicity to the hateful Fred Phelps-led Westboro Baptist Church. However, I think everyone needs to hear about the energetic and creative ways people are counter-protesting his anti-gay actions across the country.
This is the stuff that give me faith in the ingenuity and basic goodness of the American people.
These counter-protests are like a group martial art, drawing in the the negative energy of Phelp’s clan and then amplifying it and turning it back on itself. The end result is that the haters look sillier by the minute and, as momentum grows, more and more people are willing to help hold up our rainbow flag. Go little grasshoppers!
Recently Phelp’s folks planned a picket at the University of Chicago and were greeted by the members of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity who staged their own dance show, “Straight and Huggin: No Tolerance for Intolerance” to the Diana Ross anthem “I’m Coming Out”:
Other recent notable counter-demonstrations have included the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster’s Pastafarian Pirate Protest in Arkansas and the Kansas City high school protest.
